What is chain maille?
In chain maille, small metal rings called “jump rings” are woven together, one by one. A ring is opened with pliers, worked into its proper place, and then closed. The final result is a chain or mesh in a weave that may be simple or quite complex. Chain maille is simultaneously intricate and delicate, yet strong and substantial. As a jewelry-making technique, chain maille has seemingly endless possibilities.

Jump rings come in any number of sizes, from very small to quite large. The size of the ring used in the weave determines the look of the final piece. The larger the ring, the larger the final weave and resulting piece; the smaller the ring, the smaller the piece and the more intricate the weave. Crescent Maille specializes in crafting jewelry from small sized rings to create pieces that are beautifully delicate and refined.

Your jewelry is expensive. Why?
Chain maille can be made from rings of all different kinds of raw materials that are less expensive than sterling silver — silver plate, gold plate, stainless steel, copper, brass, bronze, niobium, aluminum, even rubber. I choose to work only with sterling silver because of the way it looks and feels, as well as the pleasure it is to work with. Crafting chain maille is very labor-intensive and time-consuming; many pieces are made from hundreds of individually linked rings, taking many hours.
I saw something on your website that I want, but I don't see it here. What do I do about that?
Currently my shop only stocks 25 items, though I offer many more. If you don’t see what you want here, jump on over to my store on Etsy.com.
This site doesn't have any customer feedback that I can read. Can I trust you?
Oh yes, you can. Crescent Maille has been selling jewelry online (and off) for almost a year. Before I opened this shop I sold exclusively on Etsy.com, and I have 100% positive feedback. You can read the feedback here, if you want to see how happy my customers are.
Your jewelry is too delicate for me. I want something more substantial. Can you do that?
Yes. Almost all weaves can be made with rings that are thicker (a wider gauge) and/or larger in diameter. If you would like to purchase a piece of jewelry made with larger/heavier rings — for example, to make it more suitable for a man — please contact me for a quote.
Do you have a return policy?
Yes. If you are not completely happy with your purchase, you may return it in the original condition, in the original gift tin, for a full refund. Please contact me first to make arrangements. It must be returned within one week of receipt, and you must include USPS delivery confirmation (or international equivalent) and send me the tracking number as soon as you send it back.
How do I care for sterling silver? Doesn't it tarnish?
Sterling silver will tarnish naturally over time. One way to slow this process is to store it sealed in an airtight plastic bag, away from direct light, when not being worn. For a simple cleaning, plain old dish soap works really well. Just wash the piece gently with warm water and dish soap, rinse, towel off the excess water, then let air dry. For a more thorough cleaning, a polishing cloth works well (followed by dish soap to remove the residue). For the most thorough cleaning — and a way to avoid toxic cleaning products — submerge the piece in a mixture of lemon juice (the pre-packaged kind from the grocery store is excellent) and salt for two to three minutes, stirring or agitating a few times. Again, follow with a dish-soap cleaning.
What is Big Cartel? I haven't bought through this service before, and I'm not sure I want to start now.
Please see more about Big Cartel below. If you are still uncomfortable making a transaction through Big Cartel, you can visit my other store on Etsy.com. Etsy is a well-known site, and Crescent Maille has sold there for almost a year. Perhaps you will feel more comfortable there. Just go to cMaille.etsy.com
